Most modern design trends favor sleek and smooth textures over a dated, textured approach, but the truth is that ceiling or wall texture can be tricky to remove. Luckily, the paint professionals at Curb Appeal Painting have expertise in texture removal so you can make sure your home looks its very best.

Some Common Textures

Homeowners have asked us to remove a variety of different textures over the years. These are some of the more common examples:

  1. Skip trowel is among the best known textured drywall finishes. Skip trowel refers to the plasterer's tool used to apply the texture. The plaster is thinly applied and the trowel’s angle during application causes the plaster to skip across the surface, resulting in a skip trowel texture. The end result is distinct circles of plaster formed across the smooth surface below.

  2. Knockdown texture involves a similar process as the skip trowel method, however, after layering a surface with plaster, the wet layer is dabbed with a towel, sponge, brush, etc. to created peaks that are then knocked down.

  3. The swirl texture pattern is another fairly common texture that creates a more detailed pattern on a surface, which can either be smooth or rough. For a rough look, the coating is rubbed with a brush, while a sponge is used for a smoother look. A full circle or half circle pattern is then applied.

  4. Orange peel is now quite dated, but was a popular texture in the 80s and early 90s and can still be found in older buildings. For this method, a coating is pumped onto the surface using a special spray with a high-pressure air line that runs parallel as you spray. This causes the substance to splatter into lots of small droplets that gradually merge to form a thin texture that resembles the peel of an orange, thus the texture’s name.
